What Is Aeration ?

When To Aerate ?
Aerate when grass is too compacted. Best to do right after winter when ground has unthawed to be able to get full penetration for soil. 4-6 inch depth.
Why To Aerate ?
If your lawn is hard, compact water isn't penetrating preventing deeper roots to grow. Also to get airflow down into root zone for crown to open up.

Opening soil levels, takeing thatch layer out and allowing oxygen to roots and crowns of grass.
Dethatch when you have more then 1/2 in worth of thatch. Also if lawn is holding too much moister in soil causing fungus issues. Best when grass is growing continuously.
If you have more then 1/2 inch worth of thatch, thatch will starts to choke out soil level preventing from oxygen going in to soil and crowns of grass
Top Dressing
What Is Top Dressing ?
When To Top Dress ?
Why To Top Dress ?
To spread a layer of sand or sand plus organic material over the turf surface.
When surface is un-even and or seeding grass. It's best to top dress in the spring or as soon as you've reached your regular weekly mow.
Topdressing helps increase and retain the soil nutrient, it helps the grass fight diseases and resist pests. It's also useful for improving drainage, which will result in a thicker lawn.
